The Department of Home Affairs is the gateway between Australia and the world—facilitating trade, travel and migration while protecting Australia from threats to the border. The Department coordinates and collaborates across Commonwealth, state, territory and local governments, industry and the private sector to ensure the availability of essential goods and services and to protect Australia’s critical infrastructure, and supports and enables the ABF, our nation’s customs service, to protect Australia’s border and facilitate legitimate travel and trade. The Department’s work touches every part of Australian life and contributes to the achievement of our purpose: a secure, prosperous, and united Australia.

Be part of something bigger: every employee plays a vital role—whether we are shaping migration policy, delivering innovative disaster recovery solutions, countering radicalisation, or tackling serious crime, we all share a commitment to building a safe, flourishing nation. Working for us, you will be exposed to a range of varied and interesting work. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills, knowledge and experience, specialise in a profession, participate in a secondment, undertake formal study, change career direction or climb the career ladder.

We understand that work life harmony is important for everyone, and we are committed to providing staff with access to a range of flexible work practices. This enables employees to lead healthy, balanced lives and make positive contributions to our work, teams and mission. We support you to bring your authentic self to work through: having Diversity Champions, providing leadership development programs and opportunities, offering a range of workplace initiatives that support staff in balancing their work-life commitments, enabling staff with disability to fully participate, diversity networks that provide a platform for staff to come together and connect, and providing a safe and healthy work environment that offers wellbeing programs and services.

We know that the diversity of our people is our greatest strength, and we support all staff to be their authentic self. The Department is committed to building and valuing a diverse workforce that represents the community we serve; our workforce is one that fosters inclusiveness and embraces the diversity of its people, such as differences in cultural backgrounds, race, ethnicity, disability, age, gender identity or sexual orientation.

To support this commitment we are implementing our LGBITQ+ Action Plan: A Plan for Pride, have established diversity staff networks that provide important mechanisms to connect with one another, and we actively encourage our staff to get involved with days of significance on our diversity calendar. Our LGBTIQ+ community have created Rainbow Jam, an internal social media site for LGBTIQ+ staff and friends to connect, and share information and experiences. Additionally, our Diversity Champions provide additional support to our diversity cohorts, including our LGBTIQ+ staff, by advocating for the full inclusion of all staff and driving initiatives to strengthen workplace diversity and inclusiveness across the Department.
