Russell Kennedy has committed to LGBTIQ inclusion through a number of initiatives. We have established Pride@RK, a network for LGBTIQ staff, allies and supporters, which arranges social events as well as more significant activities such as the firm’s participation in the 2020 Midsumma Pride March and celebration of the 2021 Mardi Gras festival.

The Pride@RK leadership team has representatives on the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and in People & Culture. This helps us to drive LGBTIQ inclusion initiatives across the firm. We have a formal LGBTIQ Inclusion strategy which has been approved by the Board.

Pride@RK is also supported by an Executive Sponsor, one of the principals of the firm. The Executive Sponsor advocates for LGBTIQ inclusion at the partnership level, is a visible ally for the LGBTIQ community, and participates in the Executive Ally Forum established by Pride in Diversity/AIDS Council of NSW and PwC, to keep track of developments in best practice.

Our policies and practices support LGBTIQ inclusion at the firm, including a gender neutral dress code, paid leave to support people who are transitioning or affirming gender, and paid parental leave policies which apply to a broad range of family structures regardless.

The firm regularly provides training on LGBTIQ awareness and how to be an effective ally, and our People & Culture staff undertake a more focused LGBTIQ awareness training aimed at HR professionals.

Ellen O’Neil, Senior Associate, Sydney

I have worked for Russell Kennedy since September 2019 as an Associate and now a Senior Associate in the Corporate and Commercial team, based in the Sydney office. My experience as a bisexual woman working for Russell Kennedy is an ideal example of how LGBTQ inclusion should be in the workplace.

Throughout my time at RK and in my work with Pride@RK, I have been continually impressed with the commitment to inclusivity displayed by the firm as a whole, as well as by my colleagues individually, which goes well beyond a box-ticking approach. From day one, I have been able to be my whole self and have felt confident in being “out” at work. When I made my sexuality known to my colleagues shortly after I started, the reaction was overwhelmingly encouraging and I continued to be a valued and accepted member of my team. I feel grateful that this is my experience at RK, as it has not always been in other environments.
