We administer IP rights and legislation relating to patents, trade marks, designs and plant breeder’s rights. We contribute to the innovation system more broadly by using our skills and experience to advise government and Australian businesses to make the most of their IP.

Our vision is to have a world leading IP system that builds prosperity for Australia. To do this we are committed to creating an effective, efficient and accessible IP rights system and work with a range of international agencies to build and strengthen the IP rights system. We also provide valuable insights through our research to academics, business and policy makers.

The culture is excellent – the support, the morale, the people. We aren’t too big, or too small – our community is the perfect size.

IP Australia has a clear stated purpose, protecting intellectual property.

Who we’re looking for:

If you get excited by creativity, innovation and breakthrough technologies, you should consider applying for a job with us. We offer stimulating jobs with strong career paths in the exciting and fast-growing world of Intellectual Property. As part of the APS, it creates the foundations for a successful career. The APS offers many experiences, benefits and opportunities that you wouldn’t get anywhere else. IP Australia is unique in the APS environment, you get to work with dedicated and diverse teams.

Where we are located:

IP Australia has an inclusive and flexible way of working so we have people working from home all over Australia. Our brick and mortar main office is in Canberra with a smaller office in Melbourne. The flexibility to manage my workloads around weekends means in Canberra you can take advantage of being so close to the coast and the snow.

Key Professions in our organisation:

We have people working a range of professions at IP Australia with Patents and Trade Mark Examiners and ICT professionals being the largest.

Opportunities:

We regularly recruit for Patent Examiners and Trade Mark Examiners.

Qualifications Required:

To be a patent examiner you need a recognised degree, or a diploma and appropriate industry experience. We look for specific qualities, skills and technologies during recruitment. Trade mark examiners come from varied backgrounds and work experiences, are of different ages and have different interests.

Size of Organisation:

Just over 1000

Organisational Benefits:

There is a sense of belonging and purpose, rich with diversity. I get to use my qualification at work every day, I really value that. The work at IP Australia is unique, I enjoy seeing new ideas and innovations as part of my role. The team I work with is highly qualified and we work well together in using that knowledge to deliver highly professional results. IP Australia recognises the importance of employees balancing their work and personal lives by offering staff access to an ongoing series of health and wellbeing programs, flexible work-life policies and a range of professional development programs. IP Australia is a breastfeeding friendly workplace.

IP Australia considers the diversity of our people to be one of our biggest strengths. We seek to be inclusive and embrace people from all walks of life so that our workforce is truly reflective of the Australian community we serve.

This goal is reflected in our policies and procedures for recruitment, workplace culture and customer service delivery. We have a drive network for diversity and inclusion which hosts a number of events year round and an inspire network for personal and professional development to help improve women’s executive level participation and inclusive to all staff.

IP PRIDE is our LGBTI network. We are a resource for everyone in our community, a safe space, a like-minded friend to talk to in confidence and get support. We are also a group who know how to have fun and host LGBTI events and fund raisers. We are working with groups across IP Australia to make our workplace inclusive for everyone in our community.

IP Australia is a member of the Pride in Diversity program and we are aiming to smash AWEI this year.

Keith Wagg

Delegate of the Commissioner of Patents

I’m very “out” and I don’t think I could hide who I am or lie about my personal life at work. IP Australia sees diversity as a strength that it is important for people to feel safe and included at work and because of this, working here is such a relief. I really think it makes a difference. It makes for a better workplace and a better, happier and more collaborative workforce. It is a privilege to work here and I hope we can set an example for other organisations to follow.
