Bret Burton, Snr Project Manager – Port Macquarie
I have been working at Essential Energy for over 10 years in various roles within the Business. I am currently working as a Technical Project Manager. I was lucky enough to take nearly 20 months off recently and returned to the organisation and was welcomed back with open arms.
I am in my 50’s and have identified as a gay man since I was 16yo and in all my interactions with internal and external clients/ customers/ colleagues I have never felt marginalised or like I was not valued as an individual and have always been included as part of the greater team.
Management have always been very supportive and have never allowed gender or sexuality to be an active part of any decision making around delivery or capability.
Jody Lawson, Risk and Compliance Coordinator – Bathurst
I have worked at Essential Energy for 11 years and have been fortunate to have a career that has grown in many different areas from Recruitment Manager to Project Management, and to my current role of Risk & Compliance Coordinator. I am also a member of the Essential Energy Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) group.
As a member of one of our D&I groups, I get to see firsthand how dedicated Essential Energy is to be creating a working environment that embraces and supports the diversity of its workforce. These groups have not been created as a tick and flick exercise – but rather a true commitment to providing all diversity groups with a voice and developing a workplace culture that fosters inclusive practices and behaviours that benefit all employees.
We recently celebrated ‘Wear it Purple day’ at work and as a participant of these celebrations I was overwhelmed by the support and acceptance shown by both management and my fellow colleagues for our LGBTI community.
James Byrne, Development Delivery Program Manager – Port Macquarie
Working for Essential Energy for over 20 years I have seen a monumental level of change within our organisation, including an increasing level of acceptance and pride for all our organisational brothers and sisters, regardless of their gender, race, age, ability or sexuality.
Essential Energy has become a place that celebrates people! A place that rewards hard work and achievements over societal conformity. A place that actively seeks unique outlooks to ensure we are best placed to meet the current and future challenges of our industry.
Being a proud uncle to multiple nephews and nieces identifying as LGBTI, it is comforting to know that organisations like Essential Energy are committed to providing a safe, inclusive work place for all.
